Does this sound like something you’ve said? “I would love to add a (pick one: blog, white paper, customer testimonial, case study, commentary on the energy world) to my website–but I do NOT have the time.” Maybe you have lots of ideas but not the time or patience to write it up. Or maybe you’d like to just give a writer a topic and let them research and write it.
Then you’re looking to work with someone like me! You can give me those ideas and watch me run with them–talking to your SMEs about a new solution you’re offering, or researching trends and showing readers how your company is ahead of the curve.
Here’s a list of some of the things I do for oil and gas, as well as other energy companies.
Website Blogging
How it works: I work with you or someone you assign to get the information you want potential clients to know, from either an internal subject matter expert or external research. From there I write up the agreed-on number of words and submit for you/your team’s approval. For this and all writing my base price includes up to two revisions.
Look on my website under “Blogging Links” for some samples.
Case Studies/Customer Success Stories
We start with you—what client or entity should I talk to, and what specifically should I bring out? I’ll then use my experience to ask them questions that analyze the problem they needed help with, how they chose your company, how you solved the issue, and the end result. After that I format it and write it in such a way that potential clients will see how they also need this service. I’ll send it to you or your SME for approval or revisions.
I’m often asked if we can do a case study even if the client doesn’t want their name used.
Absolutely! We can refer to them generically as “an operator in the Delaware Basin” or something like that—so the reader will have context, but the client is not seen as officially endorsing one of their vendors.
Press Releases
As above, I carefully gather the information about your news—an additional location, a product development, patent, or service—and write some engaging copy to capture readers and, hopefully, to get interest from trade publications who receive the press release to do a whole story on your company.
White Papers
A white paper is an in-depth discussion of how a product or procedure solves a pressing issue. We start by identifying the problem, ruling out other options as inadequate, then explain how your solution is best. Field results or case studies can be included as proof that the solution works.
These usually run at least 1,500 words, up to 3,000 or more. Research shows that a white paper must have enough in-depth information to answer the great majority of the potential client’s questions. It MUST be more than a “buy now” sales pitch to get their interest.
Placed Trade Publication Articles
Many energy industry trade publications accept stories from companies in their industry. There must be something new in the content—a new method of fracturing, an improved EOR method, or something. Some publications accept column-style opinion pieces as well.
Most of these stories are about 1,200 words to 2,000 words in length.
I have relationships with several leading publications, who often accept articles I have ghost-written.
How this works: First, you (or an SME at your company) agree on the topic, and I get some basic information about why it’s different and why it matters. Next, I’ll write about a 200-word pitch to a publication I think the topic would fit, and send it to the editor (after getting content approval from you).
Usually, I hear a response within a few days. Very often it’s a yes!
The publication will then give me the length, how many graphics/photos they want, and the deadline. I’ll relay that to you.
From there we can talk more in depth about the topic. I’ll organize and write it to match the interest of the publication’s readership (potential clients) and send it to you for approval or tweaking. Then I forward it to the publication.
Sometimes there are a very few edits asked for by the publication. If so, I’ll communicate with you, make the changes with your input and approval, and resubmit.
This is a sample—I do other writing as well.
